Data reveals growth in every STAAR-tested subject at every grade level
The Texas Education Agency recently released the 2021-2022 STAAR preliminary test results. The data gives a promising outlook for substantial academic gains in Lancaster ISD despite last year's statewide trend of declining STAAR test results due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a news release from the TEA, this year's STAAR results show across-the-board improvements throughout the state in all grades and subjects from 2021. Lancaster ISD's preliminary results align with the state increase and reveal growth in every STAAR-tested subject at every grade level. Most notably, improvement can be seen in the End-of-Course (EOC) English II, third-grade reading, and eighth-grade reading, which show students' achieving at or better than pre-pandemic scores. In addition, fifth-grade and seventh-grade reading results showed significant improvement, and a breakdown of the preliminary data for third-grade reading "meets-level performance" reveals students performed at 45 percentage points, which is 20 points higher than 2021's “meets-level performance”.
"After reviewing our district's preliminary results, I can say with confidence that due to the hard work of our students and intentionality of our educators, we find ourselves reviewing favorable data for our district," Superintendent Dr. Katrise Perera explained. "Our academic gains are not by accident. They are the result of a strategic and innovative academic transition that began at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. Our Instructional Services team led these efforts, and our outstanding Lancaster ISD educators implemented the plan to raise our scores and ultimately raise our roar!”
Additionally, the strategic and innovative academic transition positioned current fourth-grade reading students to perform at 43 percentage points for “meets-level performance”, which is 16 points higher than 2021's “meets-level performance”. Likewise, third- and fifth-grade math grew by 20 percentage points at the "approaches-level performance”.
When comparing 2021 vs. 2022 STAAR data, Lancaster ISD student growth was strongest in reading but also showed significant progress in math. In addition, the following list shows areas in which the preliminary data revealed gains:
- Fourth-grade math and Algebra I increased by 17 points at the "approaches level."
- Fourth-grade reading increased by 16 points.
- Third and eighth-grade reading increased by 14 points.
- Fifth-grade reading increased by 13 points,
- Sixth-grade reading, eighth-grade science, and U.S. History increased by 10 points.
