April 7, 2026, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX -- Inside Lancaster ISD classrooms, students are thinking, talking, and solving math in new ways, and it’s getting noticed. Recently, leaders from Texas Education Agency (TEA) visited two Lancaster ISD elementary campuses to see how the district’s first year of Bluebonnet K–5 Math, backed by hands-on support from SustainED Leaders, is already making an impact.
The Assistant Commissioner of Education, Nicholas Keith, along with other members of the agency observed how Lancaster ISD is utilizing the curriculum developed by TEA.
“They visited a few of our classrooms to see a real-life example of what the curriculum looked like, while they paid attention to how we are intentional around culture and implementation of the curriculum,” said Deputy Superintendent Cassandra Barker.
Throughout the visit, teachers demonstrated how the Bluebonnet K-5 Math curriculum is being used to build conceptual understanding, promote problem-solving, and encourage meaningful mathematical discussions among students. The structured, yet flexible design of the curriculum allows educators to meet diverse learning needs while maintaining rigor and alignment with state standards.
Reflecting on the district’s path to strengthening math instruction, Barker shared how data and student needs guided the decision to adopt a more comprehensive curriculum.
“We have been on a journey, looking at different curriculums and different interventions while also paying attention to the data of our students. One of the things that we noticed at the very end of the spectrum with our students were the foundational gaps that were missing, so we started looking for a curriculum that would strengthen our tier one instruction, making sure that we could focus on concept conceptual development and fluency. The Bluebonnet curriculum offered that.”
Through a grant funded by Educate Texas and Texas Instruments, SustainED Leaders has been assisting Lancaster ISD with the implementation of Bluebonnet across elementary campuses.
“We partner with district and campus leaders to plan and implement the new curriculum,” said SustainEd Leaders Leadership Development Director, Aaron Joseph. “Specifically with teachers, they have to first become familiar with the curriculum and the components of the curriculum. Once there is familiarity, teachers can focus on how they are going to deliver the material to their students.”
SustainEd Leaders provides instructional managers to assist teachers, principals, and district leaders within the classroom and beyond. Campuses utilize Professional Learning Communities (PLC) where teachers, administrators, and staff meet bi-weekly to analyze student data, share data, and refine teaching strategies with the goal of improving student outcomes to ensure high levels of learning.
“Thank you to SustainED for the work they have done in assisting us with strengthening our math practices,” said Barker. “They recommended Lancaster ISD as a district for TEA to come and observe and learn from. Not everyone has students from backgrounds that look like ours. But to know that our students, regardless of their ethnicity, regardless of their socio-economic level, are partaking in high-quality instruction, with high-quality materials.”
As Lancaster ISD continues its first year with Bluebonnet K–5 Math, the district remains focused on building on this momentum and deepening the impact in every classroom. The visit from TEA not only highlighted the progress already underway, but also affirmed that Lancaster ISD is on the right path, ensuring all students have access to high-quality instruction, strong foundational skills, and the confidence to succeed in mathematics.
