500

February 6, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX--As the final buzzer sounded following a hard-fought battle against the Skyline Raiders, the Lancaster Tigers walked away with more than a win. The victory marked a historic milestone for Head Coach Ferrin Douglas, who secured his 500th career win in Lancaster ISD.

“Wins like this mean more because you know what it takes to earn them,” Douglas said. “Every team we face brings intensity, talent, and pride. Reaching 500 wins reminds me of all the battles, the moments, and the young men who have given everything to this program.”

The milestone reflects decades of leadership, consistency, and championship-level expectations embedded in Lancaster High School basketball. While fighting through one of the toughest districts in the state of Texas, Douglas took time to reflect on his career journey.

“The 500 makes me think about every team that led me here over the past 19 years,” he said. “Every player, every opponent, every moment mattered.”

Douglas’ path to 500 wins spans nearly three decades. He began in Lancaster ISD during the 1996–1997 season as an assistant coach before continuing his career at Lincoln High School, where he helped coach the 2002 state and national championship team led by NBA Hall of Famer Chris Bosh. Since returning to Lancaster ISD in 2007 as head coach, Douglas has built a program defined by excellence and resilience.

Under his leadership, the Tigers have earned three state championships, four regional titles, and 12 district championships, which shows the marks of sustained success rather than momentary achievement.

“What I’m most proud of isn’t just the wins,” Douglas said. “It’s being able to coach my two sons and share this journey with them as both players and young men. This program has always been about standards, accountability, positive impact, and preparing players for life, and being able to share that with my own children is priceless.”

“‘Win in Life’ has always been Coach Doug’s message,” Jackson said. “I’ve been blessed to know him as both a player and a coach. His journey to 500 wins inspires me to lead, grow, and strive to be better every day.”

Douglas has been named District Coach of the Year ten times, Prairie View Interscholastic League Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2016, and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2020. Still, he points to player development as his true legacy.

“The scoreboard tells part of the story,” Douglas said. “The real legacy is in the young men who leave here prepared for life.”

Assistant Coach Ronnie Atkins echoed that sentiment.

“Coach Ferrin Douglas is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, high school boys basketball coaches Dallas County has ever seen,” Atkins said. “I’ve known him since I was 14 years old, and he has played a major role in shaping the man I am today. More than 35 years later, he’s still doing that, which is why former players continue to pour back into this program year after year.”

That legacy is evident in the number of former players who have returned to Lancaster as coaches, mentors, and leaders.

“It shows what we’re building goes far beyond a season or a single win,” Douglas said.

Douglas also credited longtime colleague and head freshman coach Joseph Mayberry, who has coached alongside him since the beginning.

“He’s been with me every step of the way,” Douglas said. “This celebration belongs to him, too.”

“To me, Coach Doug is the walking example of ‘Make It Happen,’” Mayberry said. “His focus and work ethic are contagious, and what I’ve learned from him carries into every part of my life.”

Coach Ferrin Douglas’ 500th career victory represents far more than a number. It reflects years of dedication, countless hours in the gym, and a commitment to excellence that has shaped generations of student-athletes.

Lancaster ISD will officially recognize Coach Douglas for this historic milestone on Friday, February 6, during halftime of the girls basketball game beginning at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster High School Coliseum.
