Chicago, Illinois – Lancaster Independent School District proudly announces that Superintendent of Schools Dr. A. K. Perera has been named the National Alliance of Black School Educators Josephine E. Hill Superintendent of the Year.
This prestigious national honor is bestowed upon current superintendents who demonstrate exceptional leadership and whose work has resulted in significant, positive outcomes for students of African descent. Dr. Perera was selected for her unwavering commitment to equity, access, and academic excellence, as well as her proven ability to lead systemic change that directly benefits students and families.

Under Dr. Perera’s leadership, Lancaster ISD has achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, for four consecutive years, ensuring that every student is prepared for success beyond high school. Her student centered approach has strengthened districtwide supports, expanded innovative learning opportunities, and fostered a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high expectations.
“Dr. Perera is a transformational leader whose passion for students is evident in every decision she makes,” said Marion Hamilton, Board President for Lancaster ISD. “Her leadership has elevated our district, strengthened our community’s confidence, and ensured meaningful outcomes for all students.”
Dr. Perera is known for leading with integrity and purpose. She works in close partnership with the Board of Trustees, district leadership, staff, families, and community partners to ensure thoughtful governance and continuous improvement. She also empowers her cabinet and campus leaders, cultivating a culture of trust, professional growth, and shared responsibility for student success.
“I am truly honored to receive this national recognition from NABSE, and even more honored to accept it on behalf of Lancaster ISD,” Dr. Perera expressed. “As superintendent, I know that our students’ success is the result of the collective work of so many dedicated individuals across our district. I am able to do the work I do because of the support of our Board of Trustees, my trusted executive leadership team, our exceptional staff and teachers, and our committed community partners. Our team shows up every day, through both challenges and celebrations, to serve students with excellence. This award is a reflection of their commitment, and I am incredibly proud to lead alongside them.”
