March 11, 2026, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX-- Libraries have always been gateways to imagination, where a single book can transport readers to new worlds. Now, students at Houston Elementary and Pleasant Run Elementary have a new way to step into that world. With the unveiling of Book Vending Machines, made possible by our community partners Atmos Energy and To You From Us, Lancaster ISD is making it even more exciting for students to discover the power of reading.
Students, staff, and community partners gathered for the unveiling celebration, where the unique machines were introduced as a new incentive designed to promote literacy and academic success. Instead of snacks, the machines are filled with books, allowing students to build their own personal libraries while strengthening their love for reading.
Superintendent A.K. Perera shared her excitement about the impact the machines will have on students across the district.
“I'm excited about this opportunity to gain these amazing machines that will bring our students opportunities to visit other worlds and think about things in an amazing way,” said Perera.
District leaders also highlighted how the initiative reflects the power of community partnerships and a shared commitment to student success.
“This partnership allows our students to see that their community believes in their development in literacy,” said Houston Elementary principal, Dr. Daberechi Okafor.
Representatives from Atmos Energy spoke about the company’s commitment to investing in the communities it serves and supporting programs that make a difference for young learners.
“Atmos energy believes in investing in the communities that we serve,” said Kimberly Smith. “One of the meaningful ways that we can live that out is by supporting literacy and education through our Feeling Safe And Thriving Communities program.”
Kenitra Eagans from the organization To You From Us shared the same sentiments.
“When children have access to books, and those books are exciting, confidence happens,” said Eagans. “Students have a chance to earn tokens and actually choose books of their own, creating ownership, pride, and motivation to be more.”
Smith also encouraged students to embrace the opportunity to read and explore new ideas through the books they earn.
“I say that leaders are readers. We hope every time you visit this machine, you feel excited to discover something new,” said Smith. “Every book you choose can take you somewhere new. And the more you read, the more your mind grows. You'll see the world in a different way, and you will be prepared to become the future that is waiting for you.”
The celebration also included fun moments for students, who had the opportunity to take photos with Gus the Gopher, the mascot from Atmos Energy, and Heart of Love, the mascot from To You From Us, before getting the chance to test out the new vending machines for the very first time.
Lancaster ISD Chief of Communications Kimberly Simpson says partnerships like these are a powerful example of what happens when organizations come together with a shared commitment to students.
“This is what true community partnership looks like,” Simpson said. “We are grateful for the support of organizations like Atmos Energy and To You From Us that intentionally seek out ways to impact the students of Lancaster ISD. This initiative will positively impact our campuses, and we look forward to exploring ways to expand this support districtwide.”
To utilize the book vending machines, students will earn special tokens through good grades, positive behavior, and other achievements. Those tokens can then be used to select a book of their choice, giving them the opportunity to take home a story that sparks their curiosity and imagination.
Through initiatives like this and strong community partnerships, Lancaster ISD continues to create meaningful ways to support literacy and inspire students to become lifelong readers.
