October 27, 2025, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX - In celebration of National Principals Month, Lancaster ISD took time to honor and appreciate the district’s campus principals with a special appreciation luncheon and professional learning retreat at the City of Lancaster Country View Golf Course.
The golf-themed event provided principals with the opportunity to connect with fellow leaders, and recharge through fellowship, reflection, and a bit of friendly competition. The campus leaders joined Superintendent Dr. A. K. Perera on the greens for some lighthearted golf challenges.
“Golf correlates to what we do as leaders,” said Dr. Perera. “Anytime there are changes and something new, you have to be patient, you also have to be persistent. Golf is strategic in how you approach things, and the same is true with situations at a campus. You have to map out your leadership so that you know how to handle what is coming down the road.”
Beyond being a celebration, the
retreat served as an intentional professional development experience focused on strengthening teamwork, collaboration, and leadership skills. Throughout the day, principals participated in group activities, shared insights about their leadership journeys, and reflected on their continued commitment to supporting students, staff, and families across the district.
“Anytime we provide opportunities for our principals to come together, I try to make sure it is intentional,” said Executive Director of School Leadership, Yvonne Thornton. “I want them to leave with strategies and experiences they can take back to their campuses and are able to use with their staff. More importantly, I want them to relax while they are learning and having fun.”
The retreat also emphasized the importance of balance and self-care in leadership, reminding principals that effective leadership begins with personal well-being. By the end of the day, participants left with renewed motivation and a shared sense of purpose to continue leading with passion and perseverance.
“Whenever you get the opportunity to fellowship with those that are doing the same work that you are doing, it is always good,” said Barack and Michelle Obama 9th Grade Campus principal, Addison Russ. “It is always reaffirming and it reenergizes you with new ideas that you can take back to your campus.”
Sharing similar sentiments, other Lancaster ISD principals echoed the value of connection and camaraderie, emphasizing how time spent together strengthens their sense of purpose and unity as a leadership team.
“It’s rare to find a group with such a wide range of experience that also genuinely respects one another and always has each other’s back,” said Lancaster STEM Early College principal, Ashley Tippit. “Spending time with other principals is motivating and refreshing. In these moments, you truly feel seen and heard by people who understand the unique challenges and triumphs of school leadership. The shared experiences, honest conversations, and mutual support remind you that you’re not alone in this work, and that together, you can find strength, balance, and renewed purpose.”
The district extends a sincere thanks to Grand Canyon Education, Inc. and Urgent Care Texas for their generous sponsorship and continued partnership in supporting Lancaster ISD educators. Their contributions helped make the day a meaningful celebration of leadership and community.
As National Principals Month continues, Lancaster ISD proudly recognizes its campus leaders for their vision, resilience, and passion for empowering the next generation of Tigers.
