Lancaster Independent School District Health & Wellness Plan
MISSION: The mission of the Lancaster ISD School Health Advisory Council is to promote school policies that will maintain and improve the health and wellness of its students, employees, and community members.
VISION: The vision of the Lancaster ISD SHAC is to promote healthy physical, mental, social/emotional attitudes and behaviors that can be implemented as lifelong habits.
The L.I.S.D School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program. The council will address the continued implementation action of a coordinated health program including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion, and family/ community involvement.
Throughout the school year, the Lancaster I.S.D School Health Advisory Council (S.H.A.C) held meetings once a month to discuss ways to continually assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program. During each meeting, the council addressed the continued implementation action of a coordinated health program including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion and family/community involvement. The duties of the SHAC range from recommending the curriculum to developing strategies for integrating the curriculum into a coordinated school health program encompassing issues such as school health services, counseling services, a safe and healthy school environment, recess recommendations, improving student fitness, mental health concerns, and employee wellness. [See BDF and EHAA policies below] for more information.
Health and Wellness Policy\Plan
Lancaster ISD is committed to encouraging healthy students and therefore has developed a board-adopted wellness policy at FFA(LOCAL) and corresponding plans and procedures to implement the policy.
Physical Fitness Assessment (Grades 3–12)
Annually, the district will conduct a physical fitness assessment of students in grades 3–12 who are enrolled in a physical education course or a course for which physical education credit is awarded. At the end of the school year, a parent may submit a written request to the campus principal to obtain the results of his or her child’s physical fitness assessment conducted during the school year.
Vending Machines (All Grade Levels)
The district has adopted and implemented the state and federal policies and guidelines for food service, including the guidelines to restrict student access to vending machines. For more information regarding these policies and guidelines, see the Lancaster ISD Health and Wellness Plan. [See policies at CO and FFA.]
Parents/guardians MUST assist by keeping the phone, address, custody, and emergency care information up-to-date (name of the doctor, emergency telephone numbers, allergies, name of medications, etc.) and by teaching their children safety rules. Please contact the school nurse to update any medical-related information. Having current information is critical, especially in the case of an accident or injury that requires medical attention.
Tobacco and E-Cigarettes Prohibited (All Grade Levels and All Others on School Property)
Students are prohibited from possessing or using any type of tobacco product, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), or any other electronic vaporizing device, while on school property at any time or while attending an off-campus school-related activity. The district and its staff strictly enforce prohibitions against the use of all tobacco products, e-cigarettes, or any other electronic vaporizing device, by students and all others on school property and at school-sponsored and school-related activities. [See the Student Code of Conduct and policies at FNCD and GKA Smoking is prohibited by anyone on Lancaster ISD property.
