English as a Second Language Program
The Mission of Lancaster ISD’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, in partnership with parents, guardians, and the community is to provide a rigorous academic program with 21st Century standards and a safe and orderly environment that empowers and promotes responsible and productive citizens.
English as a Second Language (ESL) is an intensive program of instruction designed to develop proficiency in comprehension, speaking, reading, and composition in the English language. Instruction in English as a second language (ESL) shall be commensurate with the student’s level of English proficiency and his or her level of academic achievement. In prekindergarten through Grade 8, instruction in English as a second language may vary from the amount of time accorded to instruction in English language arts in the regular program for non-limited English proficient students to a full-time instructional setting utilizing second language methods.
In high school, the English as a Second Language program shall be consistent with graduation requirements and students will be served using the Sheltered Instruction Model. All schools in Lancaster ISD offer ESL services.
