Identification Process
Nomination
LISD primarily accepts nominations during the first semester of the school year; however, under special circumstances, the GT Coordinator arranges opportunities for additional testing and assessment. Students in first through twelfth grade are generally nominated for the program at this time. They may be nominated by LISD personnel, parents, community members, or themselves. Assessment procedures are conducted at the end of that the semester. During the second semester, all kindergarten students are assessed and pre-kindergarten students are screened.
Assessment Procedures
LISD uses the Total Talent Portfolio. Students are assessed and placed for general intellectual ability, specific subject area ability, visual and performing arts, creativity, and leadership. Procedures may include an anecdotal nomination, teacher survey, parent survey, cognitive testing, portfolio assessment, and interview. The Admit, Review, Exit Committee reviews all assessment data, including portfolios, and assigns placement. The assessment procedures comply with the Texas Education Agency State Plan for the Education of Gifted and Talented Students.
Placement
Students in grades one through twelve, who are identified during the first semester of the school year are placed for the second semester. All kindergarten students who are identified during the second semester of each school year are placed for first grade. Information from the screening process for pre-kindergarten students is forwarded to kindergarten teachers so that they may nurture and provide enrichment for students who may later be identified as gifted and talented.
Please refer to the LISD Gifted and Talented Plan for detailed information about the Nomination, Assessment, and Placement Process.
