Lancaster ISD Partners with CVS Caremark to Offer Pharmacy Technician Externships to 13 Lancaster High School Students

Lancaster, TX/Lancaster ISD – Through a newly forged partnership between Lancaster ISD and CVS Caremark, thirteen Lancaster High School students in the Career Technical Education (CTE) Health Science Technology program are now state-certified Pharmacy Technician Trainees and will began their field externship at a local CVS Caremark Pharmacy in February. This externship will continue through the remainder of the school year and with the accompanying classroom instruction, will offer students the basic skills needed to become fully-certified pharmacy technicians.

Lancaster High School CTE Health Science Technology instructor, Cynthia Liggins, hopes that this is the beginning of their journey in a long career.

“My goal for each student is first, the successful completion of the program by becoming a licensed Pharmacy Technician and secondly, to use that license as a springboard to further their education.”

Liggins learned about this externship after attending a conference last summer and recognized its connection to the initiative of Lancaster ISD to offer its students More Than a Diploma.

Lancaster ISD Director of CTE and Early College High School Dr. Stanley Crawford was extremely proud to see these students embark upon this opportunity and stated that it will be an ongoing program.

“The students will actually have the chance to fulfill our vision that we have of them to graduate from LHS with ‘More Than a Diploma.’ They will gain the experience that can help them to pass the Pharmacy Technician’s Test for the State of Texas.”

The mission of Lancaster ISD, in collaboration with parents and communities, is to ignite learning that translates into sustainable success for all students in an ever-changing society. One student, LHS senior Jessica Crews, expressed that this partnership with CVS is timely and will place her closer to her desired career.

“My desire is to become a pharmacist. With the position of a pharmacist technician, I will get an inside look at the job by working closely with a pharmacist.” Crews said, “I am overly enthusiastic about the opportunity to participate in the CVS externship. I’m excited about the journey”

Upon graduation, Crews plans to attend Texas Tech University to continue her education.

At LHS, students in the CTE Health Science Technology Pharmacy program have courses that focus on proficiency in professional communication with the public during patient consultations and understanding the medical terminology related to pharmacology, anatomy and physiology. The students also gain knowledge on dispensing medications and the appropriate record-keeping requirements in adherence to the applicable healthcare laws and ethics.

Lancaster ISD is the only K-12 STEM District in the state of Texas and the health science technology program is only one of the major career pathways in the Lancaster High School Career Technical Education program in which students can focus their learning and gain industry standard experience. The other career pathways include Information Technology, Graphic Communications, Media Technology, Business Administration, Health Science Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Engineering, and Auto Technology.
